Can Cashmere Change A Life? - September 2013

How can cashmere sweaters change a life? Provide Soft Skills training? Retail work experience? Business interview clothing and coaching? Forklift Certification? Read on...

This month volunteers are stocking dozens of donated cashmere, silk and fine wool sweaters to the shelves of Goodwill boutique departments - all colors, all sizes - at bargain prices.

How does this help change lives? The sales in the stores stay in our community funding job training programs like Suit YourSelf, Soft Skills Workshop and Forklift Certification (see below). Shopping at Goodwill stores is not only a good deal, it is a good deed.

Goodwill Store Locations and Directions

In addition to accepting gently-used clothing, accessories, business attire (for Suit YourSelf), and housewares, Goodwill is your go-to place to recycle textiles, computers, keyboards, printers, shoes and clean cardboard.

Donations are now accepted at 11 locations throughout the Berkshires and Southern Vermont.

Goodwill Donation Drop Off Locations

Donations, recycling initiatives and sales at Goodwill retail stores make possible job training programs that help people in our community get good jobs. Many thanks for your support of Goodwill, which recently helped fund the following programs where people gain new job skills -

Forklift Certifications Eight people completed the Goodwill Forklift Certification that includes classroom instruction, field training, operators daily checklist and operator performance evaluation after 10 hours supervised operation.

* Business 101 - just one of many Goodwill job training programs

Business 101: Popcorn Wagon Project Five people participated in the innovative Business 101 Popcorn Wagon project. The team learned decision making skills for business, tracking revenue and expenses, customer service, and communication skills. And had fun working in the iconic Popcorn Wagon, thanks to Berkshire Bank Foundation. Now, that's exciting!

Soft Skills Training In partnership with Berkshire Works career center, 22 young adults, ages 14 - 21 years old, completed soft skills training through the Goodwill Works Curricula. Training included time management, decision-making, interactive activities, individual coaching, and hands-on work in our warehouse and retail stores.

Retail Work Experience In all the Goodwill stores, you will find participants from Goodwill job training programs working side-by-side with the store staff and volunteers. They get hands-on work experience, learning skills in retail merchandising, backroom processing, pricing, sales and customer service.

Suit YourSelf Year to date, 76 people have received services through Suit YourSelf, providing professional attire for job interviews and interview coaching. Those served included 13 people in the North County area, a recent expansion of the service made possible by your donations and purchases in our stores. We have been able to confirm that 17 people got the job! Suit YourSelf staff continues to present "Your Attire Matters" workshops in collaboration with other organizations and companies including Berkshire Works and Levis.
